Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1112

This specimen was lot 1112 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €130 (about US$162 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AR 1/4 de franc, 1828 W, Lille. Gad-353. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (France, Charles X (1824-30), silver quarter franc of 1828, Lille mint. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck during the reign of Charles X (1824-30) from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Lille and is a better date. It is priced about three times the commonest date (1830-A) in VF. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. The quarter franc was converted into a twenty-five centimes in 1845 then dropped completely after 1848.

Recorded mintage: 46,687[2], a fairly scarce date.

Specification: 1.25 g, .900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
