Java 1802-Z 1/2 rupee
This specimen was lot 3660 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 6,500 CHF (about US$7,757 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NETHERLANDS EASTINDIA | Java, Batavische Republik, 1799-1806 Gold-1/2 Rupie 1802. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. Hübsche Patina. (Netherlands East Indies, Batavian Republic, 1799-1806, gold half rupee of 1802. Very rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Attractive patina.)"
This type was struck by the Dutch in 1793-1807. Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
