Sincona sale 73, lot 1682

This specimen was lot 1682 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$7,720 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NETHERLANDS EASTINDIA | Java Vereinigte Ostindische Kompanie, 1602-1799. 50 Cents 1799, Jakarta. Sehr selten. NGC AU58. (Netherlands East Indies, Java, United East India Company, 1602-1799, fifty cents of 1799, Jakarta (Batavia) mint. Very rare, graded NGC AU58.)"

This is not a fifty cents but a half rupee, struck in gold 1783-85 and 1798-99. In contrast, the one rupee is known only in silver.

Recorded mintage: 3,521.

Specification: 8.01 g, 0.833 fine gold, this specimen 7.84 g.
