Jean Elsen sale 139, lot 1047

This specimen was lot 1047 in Jean Elsen sale 139 (Brussels, December 2018), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$8,008 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLANDS INDIE, Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (1602-1799), AV halve gouden ropij, 1798, Batavia. Zeer zeldzaam Miniem gebrek aan metaal aan de rand. Prachtig. Uit verzameling Garrett, verzameling Irving Goodman en verzameling Dr. Chang, veiling Spink Singapore, 21 June 1997, 85. (Netherlands East Indies, 1602-+1799, gold half rupee of 1798, Batavia mint. Rare, minor edge defect, Extremely Fine. From the Garrett, Irving Goodman and Dr. Chang collections.)"

This type was struck by the Dutch in 1793-99. Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
