Sincona sale 77, lot 2548

This specimen was lot 2548 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 9,500 CHF (about US$11,531 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"INDONESIA | Niederländisch Ostindien | Java. Vereinigte Ostindische Kompanie, 1602-1799. Gold Rupee 1797, Batavia (Jakarta). Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. (Netherlands East Indies, Java, United East India Company, 1602-99, gold rupee of 1797, Batavia mint. Very rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck by the Dutch in 1783-84 and 1796-97. We have followed the SCWC in listing this as a half rupee altho the auctioneers are probably correct in selling it as a gold rupee. The SCWC also mentions KM 177, with a weight of 8 g, which likely actually was a half rupee. Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
