from Stephen Album sale 41, lot 2773

This specimen was lot 2773 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $120. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: AR rupee, Java, 1796, United East India Company (VOC) issue, Fine to VF." This type was struck by the Dutch in 1795-99. The VOC and the succeeding administration (the VOC was liquidated in 1800) struck rupees in silver and half rupees in gold until 1815. Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
