Künker sale 385, lot 3901

This specimen was lot 3901 in Künker sale 385 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,326 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XV, 1715-1774. Double louis d'or au bandeau 1754, L, Bayonne. GOLD. Sehr schön. Erworben 2001 bei der Firma M. Meister. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, double louis of the hair ribbon of 1754, Bayonne mint. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers but the Bayonne mint issued this type 1742-58, 1763 and 1771 only. There are a few common dates for this mint but this isn't one of them.

Recorded mintage: 9,399[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers. This specimen is 15.96 g.
