Peru 1739-L V escudo
This specimen was lot 56 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $12,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 1 escudo, 1739 V, extremely rare, NGC AU 53, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Very broad flan with full details, particularly the bold assayer and date (a combination not listed in Calicó and KM), first example we have seen or heard of. Unlike the previous and succeeding lots, this appears to be a clean date, although the 9 was possibly re-punched. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection (stated on label)." This type is recorded for 1702-45 and all dates are rare with tiny mintages. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.24 grams.
