Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1914, with Blankenburg to the south

This specimen was lot 1071 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,646 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, BRUNSWICK-WOLFENBÜTTEL, August Wilhelm (1714-1731), AV ducat (Harzgold), 1721 HCH, Brunswick. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Cheval galopant à g. Très rare. Provient de la collection du vicomte Charles Vilain XIIII (1803-1878). (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus William, 1714-31, ducat of 1721, gold from the Harz, Brunswick mint. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: stallion galloping left. Very rare, very Fine.)"

This type was struck from locally mined gold 1719, 1721 and 1728-30. August William was succeeded by his brother Ludwig Rudolf in 1731 and Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel and Brunswick-Blankenburg were merged once again.
