The first specimen was lot 1235 in an old Ponterio sale. The second specimen was lot 32042 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $564. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 2 Reales 1848/7-GJ AU55 PCGS. Quito mint. Extremely well struck for the type with all details crisp. Much luster present and worthy of a premium bid." It is one of a series struck 1847-52. It is scarce, but not rare, but its strong resemblance to a United States bust quarter of the years 1831-38 increases demand for it and it routinely yields over catalog value in auctions. All pre-decimal Ecuadorian coinage is hard to find and hotly pursued.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.5-6.05 g, 0.667 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 33.
