Ecuador 1849-GJ 2 reales
This type was struck in Quito during 1847-52. It is one of a series struck 1847-52. It is scarce, but not rare, but its strong resemblance to a United States bust quarter of the years 1831-38 increases demand for it and it routinely yields over catalog value in auctions. All pre-decimal Ecuadorian coinage is hard to find and hotly pursued. The first was lot 1236 in an old Ponterio sale. The second specimen was lot 6732 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR. 2 Reales, 1849-QUITO GJ. Quito Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. A nicely struck coin, showing no areas of weakness and with light gray toning throughout. The noted cleaning has not left hairlines of note in the fields, though the surfaces do show a somewhat crumpled appearance from a defect in the original planchet."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 5.5-6.05 g, 0.667 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM 33.
