Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75670

This specimen was lot 75670 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Palladium 25 Rubles, 1993-(L). St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. Composer M. P. Musorgsky Commemorative. An utterly flawless specimen, bearing fully frosted devices that stand out starkly against a deeply mirrored backdrop." This denomination was used for several NCLT's in 1993 (Y406, Y410, Y417, Y422, Y452, Y517, Y518), some in gold and some in palladium.

Modest Petrovich Moussorgsky (1839-1881) - a prominent Russian composer, known for his monumental operas based on dramatic historical events "Boris Godunov" and "Khovanshchina" and songs inspired by folk ballads, such as "Kalistrat", "The Orphan", etc. His vocal cycles "Sunless", "The Songs and Dances of Death" and "Children's Room" are still frequently performed at concerts.

Recorded mintage: 5,500 proofs.

Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine palladium, 37 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Alexander Vasilyevich Baklanov.
