Jean Elsen sale 123, lot 962
France JE123-962r.jpg

This specimen was lot 962 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$8,720 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), AV 20 francs, 1831 T, Nantes. Tête nue. Tranche en relief. Seulement 868 p. frappées. Extrêmement Rare. Petits coups sur la tranche. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis Philippe (1830-48), gold twenty francs of 1831, Nantes mint, bare head, edge letting raised, only 868 pieces struck, extremely rare, small rim nicks, very fine.)"

The type is also known for 1830-A {Paris mint), 1831-B (Rouen mint), 1831-A (Paris mint) and 1831-W (Lille mint) but all the other dates are rare. In 1832 the Tiolier bust was dropped in favor of the Domard bust, which was used until the end of the regime in 1848.

Recorded mintage: 862 (most likely struck in 1832)[2]. All known specimens have raised edge lettering.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Joseph François Domard (1792-1858).

Catalog reference: F.525/4, Fr-553, Gad-1030a.
