Jean Elsen sale 154, lot 1789

This specimen was lot 1789 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €70 (about US$91 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1726 W, Lille. D/ B. habillé à g., décoré de la croix du Saint-Esprit. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver écu of the oliver branches of 1726, Lille mint. Obverse: uniformed bust left, decorated with the cross of the Holy Spirit; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. about Very Fine.)"

This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Lille mint. Lille struck this type 1726-40 and most dates are common. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Recorded mintage: 1,042,278 (including minors), a fairly common date.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 29,20 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 819, Dr/2 № 579, Dupl-1675; Gad-321, KM-486.22, Dav-1330.
