Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1549

This specimen was lot 1549 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €500 (about US$677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or aux lunettes, 1726R, Orléans. D/ B. drapé à g., tête nue. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Légères traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the spectacles of 1726, Orleans mint. Obverse: draped bust left with bare head; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Light adjustment marks, Very Fine.)"

This type is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime.

Recorded mintage: 115,652[2], a fairly common date.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttier, this specimen 8,08 g.
