Papal States 1723 grosso
This specimen was lot 1542 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €500 (about US$656 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST INNOCENZ XIII., 1721-1724. Die Münzstätte Rom. Grosso AN III/1723, Rom. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (Papal States, Innocent XIII, 1721-24, grosso of year 3 or 1723, Rome mint. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"
The reverse motto is taken from Psalms 145:8: Dominus illuminat cæcos. Dominus erigit elisos; Dominus diligit justos. = "The Lord enlightens the blind. The Lord sets upright those who have been thrown down. The Lord loves the just." This type was struck regnal years I thru III but only year III bears the AD date.
