Künker sale 400, lot 520

This specimen was lot 520 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,487 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Clemens XI. 1700-1721. Scudo d'oro A XX (1720), Rom. GOLD. R Sehr attraktives Exemplar, kl. Kratzer, sonst fast Stempelglanz. (Italy, Papal States, Clements XI, 1700-21, gold scudo of the year XX (1720), Rome mint. Rare, very attractive example, minor scratches, still about uncirculated.)"

This long pontificate saw the issue of many different gold scudi (Ber-2351 thru -2370). This is one of the rarer ones. It is dated to 1720 by the "·A·XX" on the obverse.

Specification: 3.36 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.31 g.
