Sincona sale 57, lot 2821

The first specimen was lot 3493 in Sincona sale 39 (Zurich, May 2017), where it sold for 3,600 CHF (about US$4,318 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Reuss, Ältere Linie (-Greiz), Fürstentum, Heinrich XXII. 1859-1902 2 Mark 1877 B. Hannover. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. NGC MS 65. (Germany, principality of Reuss, older line, Henry XXII, 1859-1902, two mark of 1877, Hannover mint. Rare in this condition. Uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 2821 in Sincona sale 57 (Zurich, May 2019), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$191 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Empire | Reuss, Ältere Linie (-Greiz), Fürstentum, Heinrich XXII. 1859-1902. 2 Mark 1877 B, Hannover. Schön. (Germany, principality of Reuss-Greiz, Henry XXII, 1859-1902, two mark of 1877, Hannover mint. Fine.)"

This one year type is quite expensive. The next two mark is dated 1892. No three, five or ten mark were struck for this state. Reuss was one of the splinter states of Saxon Thuringia and itself underwent several divisions. Many rulers were named Heinrich and several lines consolidated their numbering, resulting in this prince becoming Heinrich the twenty-second. Reuss-Obergreiz issued a few coins on the unified empire standard before falling extinct in 1902.

Recorded mintage: 20,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 11.11 g, 0.900 fine silver; the second specimen 10.97 g.

Catalog reference: J. 116, KM 126.
