Nurnberg 1640 ducat Fr-1826
This specimen was lot 4033 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nuremberg. Ducat, 1640. Date in chronogram. Obv. Eagle facing left. Leg: +DUCATUS REIPUB:NORIMBERGEN: Reverse: Angel head behind two shields. Leg: sIt DeVs aVXILIVM tVta sIt Ipse saLvs*. NGC graded MS-63. The date being in chronogram means that the larger letters in the legend are all Roman Numerals, and if added together, total 1640. A very clever way of dating coins." This type was struck 1623-40 and 1686 and tho not cheap, is more available than other Nurnberger ducats of the seventeenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, .986 fine gold, this specimen 3.47 grams, 22.09 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Fr-1826; Kellner-57, KM 72.
