Sincona sale 63, lot 1790

This specimen was lot 1790 in Sincona sale 63 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$201 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Nicholas I. 1825-1855. 3 Kopecks 1840, Ekaterinburg Mint, EM. About extremely fine. Minor edge nicks and some small scratches." The type was struck 1840-47 at Izhora (KM C146.3), St. Petersburg (KM C146.2, 1840 only), Suzun (KM C146.4) and Ekaterinburg (shown here, struck 1840-44). A new type with lower weight (KM C151) was intruduced in 1850 and struck until 1859. The weight was reduced again in 1859 and 1867 and ended up at 8 g.
