Guatemala 1806-NG M 8 reales
In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Assayer "M" is noted for the years 1785-1821. This type was struck 1791-1808. Assayer "M," for Manuel Eusebio Sanchez, is recorded for 1785-1836. This specimen was lot 234 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 750 euros (about US$1,237 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos IV (1788-1808). 1806/5. Guatemala. M. 8 reales. Bellísima pátina irisada. Brillo original. Muy rara así. S/C-. (Charles IV, 1788-1808, 1806/5 eight reales of Guatemala, beautiful original luster, very rare thus, about uncirculated)."
