Tournai 1602 2 albertins d'or Fr-389
This specimen was lot 1584 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,980. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Tournai. 2 Albertins, 1602. Antwerp Mint. Albert and Elisabeth. PCGS AU-58. This early piece from the Spanish Netherlands gives evidence of only light handling consistent for the grade. Supremely attractive, the rich golden luster is complemented by attractive pale orange patina." This type was struck 1601-07 and 1610. It was almost certainly not made in Antwerp as the lordship of Tournai had its own mint. A double albertin d'or was four-thirds of a ducat. It was replaced after 1612 by the souverain d'or. Albert and Isabella were regents for Philip III in the Netherlands.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 5.15 g, 0.895 fine gold, this specimen 4.97 g.
