Brabant (1521-45)(h) real
This specimen was lot 565 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €200 (about US$284 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AR réal d'argent (3 patards), s.d. (1521-1545), Anvers. D/ Ecu impérial couronné. R/ Ecu aux seize quartiers couronné, posé sur une croix fleuronnée. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, undated silver real or three patards, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned imperial arms; reverse: crowned arms wth six quarters over a floriate cross. Nice patina. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
At this time, the Hapsburgs were consolidating their hold on the Low Countries, a process that would not be completed until emperor Charles V obtained the holdings of the bishop of Utrecht in the 1520's. Unfortunately, at the same time, Protestantism was spreading in the Netherlands, ripping apart the Hapsburg's hoped-for unity.
