Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 561

This specimen was lot 561 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,126 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AR réal d'Espagne, 1517, Anvers. Au titre de Jeanne d'Aragon et de Charles Quint. D/ IOANA ET KAROL9 D G CASTEL LEG Grand écu couronné d'Espagne-Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ (main) ARAG ZC RE ARCHID AVSTE DVCV BVRG B Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. La date dans le champ. Rare Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. Provient de Jean Elsen, janvier 1978. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, silver Spanish real of 1517, Antwerp mint, struck in the name of Joana of Aragon and Charles V. Obverse: large arms of Spain-Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned Burgundian cross with the jewels of the Golden Fleece with the date in the field. Rare, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

At this time, the Hapsburgs were consolidating their hold on the Low Countries, a process that would not be completed until emperor Charles V obtained the holdings of the bishop of Utrecht in the 1520's. Unfortunately, at the same time, Protestantism was spreading in the Netherlands, ripping apart the Hapsburg's hoped-for unity.
