Flanders 1505 reaal
This specimen was lot 1095 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it sold for €200 (about US$277 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Schone (1482-1506), AR Spaanse reaal, 1505, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond wapenschild van Spanje-Oostenrijk-Bourgondië. Kz/ Bourgondisch kruis op een vuurijzer, tussen de wapens van Castilië, Leon, Granada en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Zeer zeldzaam Oneven rand. Mooie patina. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Philip the Handsome, 1482-1506, silver Spanish real, 1505, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned arms of Spain-Austria-Burgundy; reverse: Burgundian cross, surcharged with a jewel, divides the arms of Castile, Leon and Granada. Very scarce, uneven edge, nice toning, very fine.)"
At this time, the Hapsburgs were consolidating their hold on the Low Countries, a process that would not be completed until emperor Charles V obtained the holdings of the bishop of Utrecht in the 1520's. Unfortunately, at the same time, Protestantism was spreading in the Netherlands, ripping apart the Hapsburg's hoped-for unity. This specimen is about half the weight of a reaal struck in Gelderland in 1487. It was struck for an expedition by Philip the Fair to Spain in an attempt to seize the throne of Spain from his wily father-in-law, Ferdinand of Aragon. Similar reals were struck in Antwerp.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 3,20 g.
