Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1848

This specimen was lot 1848 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €95 (about US$135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Keizer Karel (1506-1555), AR groot, z.j. (1506-1518), Brugge. Vz/ Wapen in het veld. Kz/ Lang kruis met in het hart een lelie en in de hoeken twee leeuwen en twee lelies. Dubbelslag op kz. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, emperor Charles V, 1506-55, undated groat, Bruges mint. Obverse: arms in the field; reverse: long cross with a lily in the center with two lions and two lilies in the fields. Double struck on the reverse. Very Fine.)"

This type was struck in the early part of Charles' reign, when he was merely duke of Burgundy. He obtained the throne of Spain in 1516 and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1520.
