Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 552

This specimen was lot 552 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €70 (about US$93 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AR double patard, 1513, Anvers. D/ Ecu couronné d'Autriche-Bourgogne, dans un polylobe. R/ Croix fleuronnée, un lion en coeur. Différent: couronne. Nettoyé. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, silver double patard of 1513, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy in a polylobe; reverse: floriate cross, lion at the center; privy mark: crown. Cleaned, very Fine.)"

At this time, the Hapsburgs were consolidating their hold on the Low Countries, a process that would not be completed until emperor Charles V obtained the holdings of the bishop of Utrecht in the 1520's. Unfortunately, at the same time, Protestantism was spreading in the Netherlands, ripping apart the Hapsburg's hoped-for unity.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 3,02 g.

Catalog reference: G.H., Suppl., 171-1a; W. 635 var.
