Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 457

This specimen was lot 457 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,211 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AV florin d'or au saint Philippe, 1511, Maastricht. D/ SCE PHE INTERC- PRO NOBIS- * Saint Philippe deb. de f., ten. devant lui l'écu couronné d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ + MO AVREA FAC TRAIECTI I VROHO 1511 Croix fleuronnée cantonnée de deux couronnes et deux lis, une étoile au centre. Extrêmement rare. Petit éclat du flan sur la tranche. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, gold florin of St. Philip of 1511, Maastricht mint. Obverse: St. Philip standing, facing, holding the crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy before him; reverse: floriate cross cantonned with two lilies and two crowns, a star at the center. Extremely rare, small rim nick, Very Fine.)"

This coin is variously catalogued as a goldgulden or a florin and was roughly equal to a ducat. It is very unusual for this example to bear a date.
