Flanders (1521-56) 1/4 groat
This specimen was lot 1256 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Keizer Karel (1506-1555), biljoen kwart groot, z.j. (1521-1556), Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond wapenschild. Kz/ Gevoet kruis met in het hart een lelie en in de hoeken twee lelies en twee kronen. Zeldzaam. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, emperor Charles, 1506-55, undated billon quarter groat, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: cross with a lily at the center, cantonned with two crowns and two lilies. Scarce, Very Fine.)"
Flanders, originally part of the Burgundian inheritance, fell to the Hapsburgs on the death of the last duke of Burgundy in 1477. On the emperor Charles's abdication in 1555, the Hapsburg inheritance was divided between the Austrian and Spanish branches, and the Netherlands passed to Philip II, a dour and unbending Catholic. This type was struck in Bruges.
