Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 649

This specimen was lot 649 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €400 (about US$555 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Keizer Karel (1506-1555), AV Karolus goudgulden, z.j. (1521-1551), Brugge. Met lelie op vz. en kz. Interpunctie met punten. Vz/ Geharnast bb. v.v. met zwaard en rijksappel. Kz/ Tweekoppige adelaar met groot wapenschild op de borst. Met HISP REX en HOSTES TVOS. goede Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, emperor Charles V, undated 1506-55, gold Karolus gulden, Bruges mint, with a lily punctuating the obverse and reverse legends. Obverse: armored bust with sword and orb; reverse: double headed eagle with large arms. good very fine.)"

This type is among the more available gold coins of the reign, being struck at Bruges (shown here), Antwerp and Maastricht.
