Holland (1545-56) carolus d'or Fr-139
This specimen was lot 666 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €460 (about US$639 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, HOLLAND, Graafschap, Karel V (1506-1555), AV Karolus goudgulden, z.j. (1545-1556), Dordrecht. Met CAROLVS op vz. Interpunctie met punten. Vz/ Geharnast bb. v.v. met zwaard en rijksappel. Kz/ Tweekoppige adelaar met groot wapenschild op de borst. Met HISPAN REX en HOSTE TVO. Zeer Fraai. (county of Holland, Charles V, 1506-55, undated gold carolus, Dordrecht mint, with CAROLVS on the obverse, punctuated with points. Obverse: the crowned emperor facing, bearing a sword and orb; reverse: imperial eagle supporting a large shield of sixteen quarters. With HISPAN REX on the obverse and HOSTE TVO on the reverse. Very fine.)"
This issue is among the more available gold coins of the reign. It was also minted in Brabant (Fr-59) and Flanders (Fr-207).
