Künker sale 405, lot 3054

This specimen was lot 3054 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,561 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS MAXIMILIAN II., 1564-1576. Guldentaler (60 Kreuzer) 1572, mit Titel Maximilians II. Münzmeister Thomas Obermeier. Von größter Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (city of Regensburg, guldenthaler of sixty kreuzer of 1572, struck in the name of Maximilian II. Extremely rare, handsome patina, minor planchet defects, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1572, 1574 and 1576 and represents the guldenthaler slipping from one thaler to 5/6 thaler. This example realized nearly 3½ times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 24.62 g, 0.931 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, this specimen 24,30 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB132, Beckenb. 4101; Dav-108; Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) -.
