Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41258
SB0123-41258r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41258 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1632-HS. Goslar or Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed keys. Friedrich Ulrich. PCGS AU-55. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1627-35 and is among the more common thalers of the period. This specimen seems to be a product of the Goslar mint; HS are the initials of mintmaster Henning Schluter. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. The mintmaster's initials (HS) are not mentioned in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-6307; KM-52.5; Welter-1057A.
