Sincona sale 38, lot 1484

This specimen was lot 1484 in Sincona sale 38 (Zurich, May 2017), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$300 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Vittorio Emanuele II. 1859-1878 5 Lire 1863 T. Torino Rara. Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of Italy, Victor Emanuel II, 1859-78, gold five lire of 1863, Turin mint, rare, About extremely fine.)"

This type was struck at the Turin mint 1863 and 1865 during the reign of Victorio Emanuele II of Italy. It is struck to the same standard as the contemporary French gold five francs. It was abandoned after 1865 and is today scarce. Several countries, including Italy, were striking large numbers of silver crowns (worth about three francs in bullion) and redeeming them in France for five francs in gold.

Recorded mintage: 197,000.
