Dominican Republic 1955 peso
The specimen shown is a one year type struck for the Dominican Republic towards the end of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. This piece was accompanied by a gold thirty pesos commemorative (KM 24). Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo.
