Dominican Republic 1956 25 centavos
This specimen was lot 71344 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 25 Centavos, 1956. PCGS MS-65. Tied for the finest certified example of the type. A fully lustrous Gem example with warm brown and cobalt toning." The specimen shown is from a type struck for the Dominican Republic in 1937-61. This date was struck during the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. Copper-nickel coins using this design were issued 1967, 1972 and 1974.
