Dominican Republic 1952 25 centavos
This specimen was lot 20368 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 25 Centavos, 1952. PCGS MS-66 Secure Holder. Tied for finest graded at PCGS and NGC with four other coins. A blinding white example that is dripping with luster. Struck from lightly brushed dies which greatly enhanced the flash in the fields, but which did not affect the impeccably smooth surfaces of the devices. The cheek in particular is virtually flawless, with the portrait crisp and bold from a super strike. If you are pursuing the finest in Dominican Republic coinage, the piece offered here is a splendid example." The specimen shown is from a type struck for the Dominican Republic in 1937-61, during the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. Copper-nickel coins using this design were issued 1967, 1972 and 1974.
Recorded mintage: 400,000.
Specification: 6.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 24 mm diameter, designed by T. H. Paget.
