Dominican Republic 1963 peso
This specimen was lot 73213 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Peso, 1963. London Mint. PCGS MS-64. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the republic. Lustrous and smooth surfaces are purely argent in color, practically as fresh as the day they were struck. A delightful and popular commemorative issue that would easily enhance many cabinets." This issue commemorates the recovery of independence from the Spanish in 1863. It was accompanied by a centavo (KM 25), five centavos (KM 26), ten centavos (KM 27), twenty-five centavos (KM 28) and fifty centavos (KM 29). Despite the small mintage, many were saved and the type is common.
