Dominican Rep 1963 5 centavos rev 600.jpg

The specimen shown is from a type struck for the Dominican Republic in 1963. This date was soon after the end of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. This issue commemorates the recovery of independence from the Spanish in 1863. The regular issue with the Indian princess obverse was struck 1937-74.

Recorded mintage: 4,000,000.

Specification: 5 g, copper-nickel, plain edge, 21 mm diameter, designed by T. H. Paget.

Catalog reference: KM 26.
