Jean Elsen sale 137, lot 1063

This specimen was lot 1063 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,322 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AR 5 francs, 1818H, La Rochelle. 11.865 p. frappées. Très rare Le droit nettoyé. Légères traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, second restoration of 1815-24, silver five francs of 1818, La Rochelle mint. Very rare, obverse cleaned, light adjustment marks, very fine.)"

This issue, from the La Rochelle mint, is a rare date of a type struck 1816-24 with only one example reported in Le Franc[1]. This type succeeded the uniformed bust type of the first restoration, struck 1814-15. It was demonetized in 1928. A complete set of this type comprises 96 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The entire production run, 1816-24, totaled about 104 million pieces.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.

Recorded Mintage: 11,799[1].
