Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72455
SB523-72455r.jpg

This silver dollar was struck during the reign of Edward VII, king of Britain. The type was struck 1895-1935 for use in "Oriental trade," which would include India, Indochina, the East Indies and China proper. This coin could easily be filed under India as most (including this one) were struck in India, either at the Bombay or Calcutta mints. The majority were struck 1895-1904, 1907-13 and 1925-34. The coin does not bear a portrait of the sovereign nor is marked with the country of origin tho the figure of Britannia makes it clear. The second specimen was lot 72455 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Dollar, 1902-B. Bombay Mint. Edward VII. PCGS Genuine--Questionable Color, AU Details. Despite the questionable color on the surfaces, this wonderful piece yields much appeal and charm, and is certain to capture many excited bids."

Recorded mintage: 30,404,000.

Specification: 26.96 g, 0.900 fine silver, 0.780 troy oz ASW, designed by G. W. DeSaulles.

Catalog reference: KM-T5; Mars-BTD1; Prid-13.
