Goldberg sale 128, lot 1280
G128-1280r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1280 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. ½ Louis d'or aux lunettes, 1728-I (Limoges). Louis XV. PCGS graded About Uncirculated Detail (Scratch)." The half louis d'or aux lunettes was introduced in 1726 along with the larger louis d'or aux lunettes but quickly proved to be unnecessary. All the subsequent dates are rare to very rare. The Limoges mint struck this type 1726-34 and 1736, more than most.

Recorded mintage: est. 1,600, a rare date[2].

Specification: 4.08 g, .917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J. C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 808, Dr/2 № 541, Fr-462; Gad-329; KM-488.6.
