Künker sale 385, lot 3630

This specimen was lot 3630 in Künker sale 385 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,326 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, Ludwig Rudolf, 1731-1735, seit 1714 in Blankenburg. 1/2 Taler 1733, Braunschweig, auf die Vermählung seines Enkels, Karl (I.) mit Philippine Charlotte, der Schwester Friedrichs II. von Preußen. 13,00 g. Welter 2664 B. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Philippine Charlotte kam als vierte Tochter des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhelm I. und seiner Gemahlin Sophie Dorothea von Braunschweig-Calenberg-Hannover zur Welt. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Louis Rudolf, 1731-35, duke in Blankenburg since 1714, half thaler of 1733, Brunswick mint, on the wedding of his uncle, Charles I, with Philippine Charlotte, sister of Frederick the Great of Prussia. Extremely rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine. Philippine Charlotte was born the fourth daughter of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I and his wife, Sophie Dorothea of Brunswick-Calenberg-Hannover.)"

In addition to the regular issue "wild man" half thaler of 1732-35 (KM 827), the duke struck two commemorative half thalers in 1733; this one, for the wedding of the duke's uncle, and KM 837, for the wedding of his daughter Elizabeth Christine with Frederick of Prussia. The two commemoratives are today rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 22.20 g.

Catalog reference: KM 836, Dav-2599; J. 25; Olding 7.
