Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1313

This specimen was lot 1313 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux palmes, 1694G, Poitiers. 2e réformation. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of the palms of 1694, Poitiers mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned round arms of France between two palms. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"

The specimen shown is a demi-écu aux palmes ("half écu with palms") struck in Poitiers during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older half écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux insignes. Droulers[2] notes this date as rather scarce. Lettered edging was introduced to the half écu about 1686.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 31-32 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 13,38 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 618, Dr/2 no. 412, Dupl-1521A; Gad-185.
