This specimen was lot 71223 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. 10 Pfennig, 1873-H. Darmstadt Mint. Wilhelm I. PCGS MS-62. The first year of issue, this SCARCE, choice minor dazzles the eye with a steely gray hue and great lustrous brilliance." This coin is an copper-nickel ten pfennig from a type issued 1873-76, 1888-89 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G"), Darmstadt ("H", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design.

Recorded mintage: 44,000 (a rare date).

Specification: 4 g, copper-nickel, 21 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-4; J-4.
