France 1792-W 15 sols

This specimen was lot 72371 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 15 Sols, 1792-W. Lille Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. 2nd semester, with dot. The only [one] of the type in the PCGS census, this lustrous, near choice example emanates from the troubled revolutionary period just before the king was executed." This type was struck 1791-93 at numerous mints. Its face value was one-eighth of an écu.
