Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features an antique Maltese lamp. This type was struck 1972, 1976-81 altho only the 1972 was struck for circulation. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
Recorded mintage: 4,320,000 plus 13,000 proofs.
