Heritage sale 61259, lot 99155
H61259-99155r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99155 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-BB UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Strasbourg mint, Large palms variety. One of reportedly a mere 8,000 examples of the type struck at the Strasbourg mint in this year, and by far the finest to have come to auction in recent memory--our research revealing just two others having sold publicly in recent years. Absent from the Ford Collection and Parke-Bernet sale, the piece here exhibits excellent sharpness to the strike, the noted cleaned having done rather little to dull the offering's overall eye appeal." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, grandes palmes, struck at the Strasbourg mint (mintmark "BB") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723-25 only but from twenty-eight mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck 1723 only, and in turn was superseded by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 8,000.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 799, Dr/2 № 538, KM 470.3, Gad-339 (R2), Dup-1638.
