Spain 1635-MD M 8 reales
This specimen was lot 1396 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 6,000 € (about US$7,769 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1635. Felipe IV. Madrid. M. 8 reales. Fine example for this mint. Ex Aureo y Calicó 03/08/2012, no. 1161. Very Rare, especially in this condition. MBC [very fine]." This scarce type was struck 1621, 1627, 1631-35, 1639-44, 1649-51, 1659-62. Many varieties exist in the position of the mintmark and denomination, which was sometimes written "8" and sometimes "VIII". At this time, the Madrid mint was a private venture and its mintmark did not bear the crown used later.
