Aureo sale 232, lot 134

The specimen shown was lot 134 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 1,500 euros (about US$2,475 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1635. Segovia. R. 8 reales. Bella. Rara y más así. EBC. (Spain, Eight reales of 1635, Segovia mint. Beautiful and rare thus; extremely fine.)

This type was issued intermittently at Segovia 1632-60. Two error varieties are noted for 1635; with obverse legend misspelled "PHILIPXXS" and with the reverse legend misspelled "HISPANIARAM." Even the normal issue shown here is rare and expensive. The aqueduct was the mintmark for the Segovia mint until it closed in the 1840's.
